Most modern vehicles are equipped with an electronic speed limiter programmed into the ECU that restricts maximum speed. For passenger cars, this is typically set at 250 km/h by gentleman agreement among European manufacturers. Commercial vehicles such as vans and trucks are limited to lower speeds, often 90 km/h or 120 km/h depending on the vehicle class and market.

The electronic speed limiter works by cutting fuel injection or reducing boost pressure once the programmed maximum speed is reached.
