Swirl flaps are small butterfly valves located in the intake manifold of many diesel and some petrol engines. They are designed to create turbulence in the intake air at low engine speeds to improve fuel atomization and combustion efficiency. At higher RPMs, the flaps open fully to allow unrestricted airflow.

While the concept is sound, swirl flaps have become notorious for mechanical failures. The flap spindles, screws, and actuator linkages can wear, break, or loosen over time. When a swirl flap fails, broken components can be ingested into the combustion chamber, causing catastrophic engine damage including scored cylinder walls, damaged pistons, and bent valves.

Due to this reliability risk, many vehicle owners choose to physically remove or blank the swirl flaps as a preventive measure. However, simply removing the flaps without an ECU modification will trigger fault codes and potentially affect engine operation, as the ECU expects to control and monitor the swirl flap position.
